生活垃圾的发热值较高，具有很好的利用价值，据了解，垃圾发电项目就是利用这个特点，通过封闭储存，高温分解，然后通过输送系统将垃圾输送至机械炉上进行干燥、着火、燃烧等，把焚烧垃圾时所产生的热量变成蒸汽，这种蒸汽经过蒸汽涡轮发电机的转动就能发电了。垃圾燃尽后剩下的炉渣物理性能稳定，冷却后的炉渣，输送至外部的渣坑，经炉渣起重机装车后外运进行炉渣综合利用，可用作铺制砖，还可用作卫生填埋场的中间覆盖用土等。
以下为焚烧炉的垃圾前处理系统。
为了尽可能减少贴纸杂质、砖头等硬物进入到垃圾库，以造成破碎机的损坏，故在垃圾进入破碎机前必须进行垃圾分选等工序，就是将混合垃圾进行有效的分类，对某垃圾成分中的少量杂志进行分离，得到较为单一的祖分，或从混合垃圾中分离出某种少含量垃圾组合，分离出来的分类垃圾，这样有利于垃圾的回收再利用和后续处理。经过分拣之后的垃圾进行破碎后，就通过炉前输送系统（带式输送机），将其运至焚烧炉进行后续事宜。长益针对该项目输送带的实际情况，做了二级清扫装置，否则输送机上的垃圾料层过厚，会造成输送困难。经过二级清扫之后的炉前输送带，轻松持续无负荷，减轻了工作人员的负担，保证了垃圾输送的效率。
